Current Rating of HostMonster
HostMonster Review Update & Plan Change.
Since I started using HostMonster over three years ago I have simply had the best service one could ask for.
I haven't had any downtime like I had at my previous website hosting companies.
When HostMonster suddenly increased their disk space and bandwidth I was pleasantly surprised.
They increased it to a whopping 1,500GB of disk space and 15,000Gb Bandwidth. Previously they had been offering 300GB disk space and 3000GB of bandwidth.

I don't know many people that would out grow that amount of disk space and bandwidth anytime soon. In fact I would say 99% of websites would never use that much bandwidth or disk space.
Shopping Carts
A lot of people these days are in need of a shopping cart, thankfully HostMonster provides a variety of solutions. Personally I have always used OS commerce and I know the program back to front. I find the community exceptionally helpful and the application itself amazing.

HostMonster offers awstats as one of it's website statistics packages
Awstats has always been my personal favourite.
If you have multiple domain names you will have a link for each one and a separate statistics package.
Once you have selected the domain you wish to see the statistics for Awstats opens up and gives you a load of information.
Here is an overview of all the different statistics you can view
When they hit your HostMonster site:
Monthly history - Track to see your visitors are improving oer the months
Days of month - A break down of everyday of the month, see when your good times are
Days of week - What is the most popular day of the week for people to hit your site

It apparently stands for Pretty Good Homepage.

PHP.ini allows you to customize a PHP ini file to change some of the settings of PHP. A php.ini file allows you to customize settings like global variables, default directory to upload files and the allowed size for uploaded files.
When PHP starts up, it behaves according to settings specified in the availabe php.ini file. The Web server will look for this file in the following locations and in the following order:
The directory from which the PHP script was called
The root of your Web directory (typically public_html)
The Web server's default php.ini
Life would be pretty difficult without this feature and you really need a webshost that allows you to. HostMonster does and the way they allow you to control your site is very important.

HostMonster email accounts and winning against those spammers.
Spam, what a nightmare for all of us. I used to have big, big problems with spam until I started using Host Monster . Host Monster solved a lot of problems I was having because for free they give you a little tool called Spam Assassin. Spam Assassin is a very powerful tool that will help you eliminate spam in your inbox.
The power behind the tool comes from its' ability to identify spam patterns and delete them before you can even see them. This worried me at first because I thought, "What if I lose important emails?". What I decided to do was use a little feature that allows you to mark the incoming email as spam. I set my email program to route any incoming email marked as spam to a spam folder. I did this through message rules with me favorite email program.
Then when all the spam emails came into my inbox I could go through them and see if any important emails had come through the cracks. There hadn't been any so after about two weeks I decided to let the server delete them and I never saw that spam again.
It is so much easier to operate me Host Monster email account with the spam being deleted automatically. Spam Assassin also has inbuilt features to allow you to change who it identifies spam. Based on rule sets Spam Assassin works out if an email is spam. It does this by using knowledge of what spam is like. If the spam email breaks these rules, BAM it is gone. The power you have as the user is you can change the amount of rule that need to be broken in order for the email to be quietly removed.
For instance you could set it to 5, meaning that 5 rules need to be broken in order for Host Monster 's spam assassin to delete your email. Or maybe you want to feel extra safe so you set it to 8 etc etc..
Host Monster are providing this tool for free and it is fantastic. I had huge problems with spam before I started using this program. It's been the answer to a lot of my problems.
While we are on email, Host Monster allows you to have unlimited email accounts. Combine that with unlimited domains and that is a hell of a lot of email addresses you could possible have. I have a friend who has five businesses. So he has five domain names and a lot of email addresses. He can host all of these domains and email addresses at Host Monster for the one low price.
There are so many people out there that are paying for separate hosting accounts and x 5 domains etc.. This all adds up and is completely unnecessary. Its crazy really.
If you are going to expand in future or are just looking for top quality domain hosting at a great price get a long to Host Monster .

Hostmonster customer service is superb - SSL certificates and Unique IP's
In my experience whenever I have needed and help or assistance from Host Monster they have been exceptionally helpful. The main help I need from Host Monster is either setting up SSL certificates or changing the domain name of accounts.
When you change the domain name of an account it needs to be reset. This has happened to me a few times because the person I have been doing it for gave me incorrect information. It is surprising how many time this has happened to me. Luckily Host Monster have always been able to quickly fix it up and they are very fast at setting up SSL certificates and unique IP's.
You need an SSL certificate to secure your site when passing information. Specifically in my case I need it for shopping carts. A unique IP is also required for Host Monster to set up you SSL certificate. I unique IP will give you your own address.
For example 192.16.0.1 , might be the IP address that many websites use on the server Host Monster have put you on. You need 192.168.0.123, because no one else has it. This enables you to have your SSL certificate set up and you are on your way to secure transactions.
The cost is very cheap and I haven't come across a cheaper set up on the web. Its about $2.50 per month for your unique IP and $50 for the certificate. That is a rough estimate and I don't really know because as far as the cost of getting a website delivered goes it is pretty cheap and a very minor cost.
I have tried to set up SSL certificates in the past myself and have found it can be difficult and messy. So I am glad Host Monster will do it for you without fuss.
I once bought an SSL certificate from Go Daddy and getting it installed on a web host was an absolute nightmare. It required an extra certificate to be installed and no-one really knew what the hell was going on. I tried several hosting companies and finally decided to let Host Monster do it in-house. To my surprise it was very quick and painless.
While I am on that subject the hosting company I was with at the time took days and days to answer the smallest of questions. I am so glad that I found Host Monster because I haven't had that problem since. The hosting company in question was sold to another hosting company. The first I heard about it was when the new company contacted me. The website had been messed up because the environment had changed. Talk about a living nightmare. It took approx a week or two to get back up and running and tens of thousands of lost sales. I was livid and swore I wouldn't go local again.
What do I mean be local? Well in my neck of the woods there are a few local hosting companies and I like to support my local area. The problem is these people let you down. Firstly they need to charge a premium to stay afloat and second of all for what they charge they can't compete. Now I understand there needs to be a little understanding, but when I lose so much money due to an ignorant system admistrator who doesn't know the first thing about my site, all because my local company took my support and basically threw it in my face. (You can see this still hurts.)
Host Monster, have never let me down and there is no way I would ever risk my valuable asset to a smalltime company again. Host Monster are not the most expensive host but they are the best around. SO if you want to avoid a nightmare similar to mine then I suggest, skip the smalltime guys who really can't offer you the support you need and head straight over to Host Monster where you will get looked after and be safe in the knowledge you won't be left high and dry one day like I was with my local company.

Host Monster limit on emails
Host Monster by default puts a limit on the amount of emails you can send per an hour.
The reason for this is so we don't have users using spam and slowing the servers down.
At first I thought this was bad but Host Monster is doing the right thing.
The limit is 50 emails per an hour.
Here is a tip, you can email them and get the amount lifted. I wrote a script to send about 300 emails per an hour and it works nicely.
Host Monster are always helpful and do the right thing by the customer
Give them a try you won't be disappointed

The email address associated with your domain name goes through your website host. The host will store the emails and you need a way to manage them.
Host Monster uses Cpanel and I find it so simple to manage all the email accounts and filter out the dreaded spam.
Web hosting companies will sometimes offer a choice between POP3 and IMAP email accounts.
The main difference between the two is that a POP3 email account removes email from the server after it has been downloaded by your email client, whereas an IMAP email account keeps the email stored on the web server.
Most website operators will prefer a POP3 email account because it’s faster to read email from your own computer than from online.
The difference between an email acount and an email address.
An email account has a name@somewhere.com and a username and password with which to use that account.
An email address may just be an address that is forwarded to another account.
name2@somewhere.com points to the account name@somewhere.com and all the emails are collected through name@somewhere.com

Web Host Bandwidth / Data Transfers
Data transfer, sometimes referred to as bandwidth, refers to the amount of information passed to and from your website.
Whenever somebody looks at a page on your website, information is transferred. This is measured in megabytes (MB).
Host Monster offers 15,000 Gigs of Transfer
The bigger the files are on your website, the more information will be transferred.
You can estimate the amount of data your website will transfer in a month by calculating the size, in kilobytes (KB), of an average page request, and multiplying it by the number of page views your website will receive in a month.
Unless you have a site like microsoft or you have 100 websites on one account. With Host Monster this thought shouldn't even cross your mind.
If you have an web page with 5 photos, it might all add up to 250kb.
Let’s say your website receives, on average, 100 visitors per day. This equates to 3000 visitors per month and a total data transfer amount of 750MB.
So lets step it up a little bit.
Let's say you have 100 pages and 10,000 visitors a day, each page being hit and averaging 100kb.
Per day that would be 10,000 MB or 10 Gigs. So, 300 Gigs per month.
Now that's a lot of visitors and a large site.

So you could run 50 websites of that size we just discussed. WOW
Some Web hosts’ data transfer offerings vary greatly, and can be between a tiny 500MB/month and 15,000 GB/month.
Providers not located in the United States will usually have much tighter limits on data transfers .
Beware of hosts with tiny limits and extra charges. I just stick with Host Monster becuase I know I will never go wanting for bandwidth
Web Host Storage Space
The amount of disk space, in megabytes (MB), you web host allows you to use on your plan.
Host Monster offers 1,500 Gigabytes of Hosting Space. Which is a massive amount.
My computer hard drive is only 100 Gigabytes, so essentially I could put the contents of my entire computer on the server 15 times over.
The size of your website and the types of files it stores determine how much storage space you are likely to need with your web hosting account. Normal business use would be 100 megabytes maximum. So Host Monster offers 150 times that amount. Needless to say plenty of room.

What is website up time
Reliability and speed of access
This is very important. A site that is frequently down will lose you lot of visitors. If someone finds your site on the search engine, and he tries to access it but find that it is down, you will lose that potential customer. Snail access is also very annoying for visitors.
Not only should the web host be reliable and fast, it should guarantee its uptime (The time when it will be available on the internet). Look for a minimum uptime of 99%. too low - it really should be 99.5% or higher. The host should provide some sort of refund if it falls below that figure. Note though that guarantees are often hard to enforce from your end - the host usually requires all sorts of documentation.
However, without that guarantee, the web host will have little incentive to ensure that its servers are running all the time.

HostGator - VERY Disappointed - Is There a BETTER Shared Host for the Same Price?
I thought I would share another conversation that highlights the benefits of going with HOST MONSTER and the piece of mind you will have knowing you are with the most reliable host on the market.
"I recently signed up to HostGator, reading how they had great speeds etc... However that has sadly NOT been my experience so far!
The download speeds have been significantly slower than what I had other hosts, with server loads averaging in the high 5's with 2 cpus. (Due to the reviews I had read, I expected HostGator to be significantly quicker than 1&1, but the opposite has been true so far.)
There were quite a few complications with moving my vB site over (which I had them migrate for me), and several aspects still aren't functioning correctly. They lost some of the special characters in the database on the first move attempt. Now a bunch of my pages on my vB are coming back with a 404 File Not Found error, such as my User CP, Profile, Options, Avatar, etc...
In addition to all of that, I have a half dozen sites which use FrontPage extensions, that have been an absolute nightmare to try to migrate over to their server! When I try to upload these sites, they keep aborting the upload with different server related error messages. The forms and other FrontPage extension related features have not been working correctly. I've had probably 30+ correspondences with HostGator tech support, most which take on average 12+ hours to hear back on, and many of my issues are still unresolved.
Prior to signing up with HostGator, I had considered HOST MONSTER as another alternative."
I told him told him that unfortunately mistakes happen in the internet world and HOST MONSTER would have been the best choice. It's a shame he had to waste so much time and energy.

You don't want to ever use a free web host for any of your sites - the reason is pretty simple.
You certainly get what you pay for.
Even if the hosting was superb (which it won't be) with all of the bells and whistles, when something goes wrong you need someone to be able to fix it.
People are only accountable if they get paid. If it's free, there's no urgency on their part.

One of the more common questions I get asked is "Where should I host my site?"

How A Major Hosting Company Basically Closed Me Down!
| We sold great hosting at a good price. Then Along Came This Company..... After years of selling hosting, along came HOST MONSTER - a large US based company |
HOST MONSTER have long been recognised as an icon. Over the past few years the rest of the world has woken up to the superb quality and service of Hostmonster.
Anyhow, I know hosting. Our customers and I know the very strict quality standards that we set. And I knew the great service we provided. So I had nothing to fear from Host Monster.....or so you'd think.
How Host Monster Closed Me Down.....
How Host Monster basically closed me down was like this:
Superior hosting - this was rather embarrassingly demonstrated on a major TV show here in America when the hosting company was shown, by an independent expert, to be far, far superior to the hosting we were providing.
Cheaper prices - the volume that Host Monster do means that they can buy huge amounts in bulk and they pass the savings on. I simply couldn't compete on price.
Better customer service - I've always prided myself on the quality of customer service we could provide. But it's simply impossible for us, to deal with phone calls throughout the night. Because of the much lower volumes of calls it's not feasible for us to employ staff to deal with just a few calls each night.
Better guarantees - because the hosting was superior, Host Monster could afford to provide a more comprehensive guarantee.
Quicker response - because Host Monster so well organised, the response time would be much less.
More options - HOST MONSTER has a huge range of options that we simply couldn't compete with (the numbers just weren't there for us).
Work better - with dedicated system administrators there's no question that HOST MONSTER hosting is the most reliable hosting available.
Better quality servers- the greatest benefit from hosting comes from the properties of genuine quality servers. Namely the reliability. HOST MONSTER, again because they are so big and well organised can provide this.
Look, I'm in business and know when you need to bow out of a market. I couldn't keep selling our hosting knowing that our customers could get better hosting at a better price at HOST MONSTER.
So we simply refer all our old customers and visitors direct to HOST MONSTER or to our old hosting site. Take it from me - you simply won't find a better hosting site at a comparable price.
The main myth about hosting.
One of the most common questions we get asked is "Will my site remain online at all times?
The answer to that is a resounding "Yes."
